Cold foil uses a specially applied adhesive to transfer decorative foil rather than a heated metal stamping die. On compatible presses it can be integrated into the print run.
How transfer works
Adhesive is printed where the metallic effect is needed. The foil contacts the stock and is transferred through a process suited to the adhesive and press system, remaining on the selected areas.
Compatible inks can be overprinted on the metallic surface for a range of coloured metallic effects; results vary by foil, ink and substrate.
How is it different from hot foil?
Hot foil uses a heated die and pressure; cold foil uses a printed adhesive image. Cold foil normally leaves a flatter finish, and substrate suitability must be assessed on the actual production line.
What to prepare in artwork
Provide the metallic area as a separate mask. If it will be overprinted, separate the colour artwork from the foil mask. Check registration, stock and desired sheen on a sample.
